Intrusion Detection System Using Node-Predictive Attack
Intrusion Detection System Using Node-Predictive Attack Intrusion Detection System Using Node-Predictive Attack Graph Model for Cloud Ambikavathi C Dr.S.K.Srivatsa Abstract- The role of Intrusion Detection System (IDS) in security world is considered as a key requirement for any computing model. This traditional methodology can add its own contribution of security to the distributed Cloud environment. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the steps that are needed to be taken in order to efficiently implement the IDS in cloud environment. The proposed system uses node predictive attack graph to correlate the newly occurred attacks with known attacks. The prediction steps are used to later monitor the environment and control the attacks. Keywords-Attack Graph; Cloud Computing; IDS ,; I. INTRODUCTION A. What is Cloud computing? Cloud computing is ââ¬Å"a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interactionâ⬠[1]. This cloud model is co mposed of three service models, four deploy ment models and five essential characteristics . The three service models are So ftware as a Service (SaaS), Platfo rm as a Se rvice (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The four deployment models are private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud and community cloud. The five essential characteristics of cloud are on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity and measured service. B. What is IDS? Intrusion detection systems are software or hardware systems that automate the process of monitoring the events occurring in a computer system or network, analyzing them for malicious activities or policy violations and produces reports to a management station. IDSs a rehost-based, network-based and distributed IDSs. Hos t based IDS (HIDS) monitors specific host machines, network-based IDS (NIDS) identifies intrusions on key network points and distributed IDS (DIDS) operates both on host as well as network [7]. IDS can be a valuable addition to the security arsenal. IDS performs the following functionalities : Monitoring and analyzing both user and system activities .Analyzing system configurations and vulnerabilities .Assessing system and file integrity.Ability to recognize patterns typical of attacks.Analysis of abnormal activity patterns.Tracking user policy violations.The extensive use of virtualization in implementing cloud infrastructure brings unique security concerns for customers or tenants of a public cloud service. Virtualization alters the relationship between the OS and underlying hardware. This introduces an additional layer virtualization that itself must be properly configured, managed and secured. Specific concerns include the potential to compromise the virtualization software, or hypervisor. So virtual machine security is essential in cloud environment. C. Attack Graph Attack graphs are used to determine how vulnerable their systems are and to determine what security measures to deploy to defend their systems. In the predictive attack graph, a node represents a host and an edge represents vulnerability. The predictive attack graph representation accurately forecasts the effect of removing vulnerabilities by removing edges from the attack graph. The predictive attack graph is the full attack graph with redundant paths removed. A path is considered redundant if the path contains the same vulnerability-host pair in two or mo replaces along the same attack path. In node predictive attack graph, a node can be host or a group of hosts, and an edge can be vulnerability or a group of vulnerabilities. The node predictive attack graph is a simplified version of the predictive attack graph. The node predictive attack graphââ¬â¢s purpose is to mitigate the effects of ââ¬Å"firewall explosion.â⬠Firewall explosion causes redundancy in the predictive gr aph. Thus, the node predictive attack graph mitigates this issue by merging nodes of the attack graph. Two nodes are merged if the attacker can compromise the two hosts from all hosts the attacker has already compromised. [16] Rest of the paper is organized as follows. Section II discusses about the related work done. Proposed system is described briefly in section III. Section IV, presents the implementation part of EIDS and section V concludes with references at the end. II. RELATED WORK In this section, we present related research to our proposed work: Intrusion detection in cloud and attack graph models. A. Anomaly based IDS Anomaly or behavior based detection [7] refers to techniques that define and characterize normal or acceptable behaviors of the system (e.g., CPU usage, job execution time , system ca lls). Behaviors that deviate fro m the expected normal behavior are considered intrusions. Generation of high false alarms is the major drawback of this type which leads to low detection efficiency. But it is able to detect new attack patterns. Here, Input parameter selection and analysis of ciphered data are tedious processes . It attains low throughput but high cost. Metrics and frame work to evaluate this IDS and compare with alternate IDS techniques is in need. Also it is poor in defending themselves from attacks. To avoid false alarms in anomaly based systems the system must be trained to create the appropriate user profiles. It requires extensive training to characterize normal behavior patterns. B. Signature based I DS Signature or Misuse based detection refers to techniques that characterize known methods to penetrate a system. These penetrations are characterized as a ââ¬Ëpatternââ¬â¢ or a ââ¬Ësignatureââ¬â¢ that the IDS looks for. The pattern/signature might be a static string or a set sequence of actions[9]. It can only detect known attacks. Frequent updation is needed in the database for signatures of new attacks. The advantages of this IDS are, it generates less number of false alarms. A single signature can detect a group of attacks. It does not require extensive training. C. Fuzzy based IDS Fuzzy logic can be used to deal with inexact description of intrusions. It provides some flexibility to the uncertain problem of intrusion detection. Fuzzy logic techniques[5] are used for classification techniques. The classification algorithm is applied to audit data collected which learns to classify new audit data as normal or abnormal data. It allows greater complexity for IDS while it provides some flexibility to the uncertain problem of IDS. Most fuzzy IDS require human intervention to determine fuzzy sets and set of fuzzy rules . D. Artificial Neural Network based The goal of using ANNs for intrusion detection[5] is to be able to generalize data from incomplete data and to be able to classify data as being normal or intrusive. It is best because of itââ¬â¢s self learning capabilities , quick processing and can find small behaviour deviations. But itââ¬â¢s downside is it requires more tra ining sa mples and time consuming. E. Data Mining based IDS Some intrusion attacks are formed based on known attacks or variant of known attacks. To detect such signatures or attacks, signature apriori algorithm can be used, which finds frequent subset (containing some features of original attack) of given attack set. In Cloud, association rules can be used to generate new signatures. Using newly generated signatures, variations of known attacks can be detected in real time[5]. F. Profile based IDS In VM profile based IDS[12], a profile is created for each virtual machine in cloud that describes network behavior of each clouduser. The behavior gathered is then used for detection of network attacks on cloud. It detects the attacks early with robustness and minimum complexity. G. Entropy based IDS Entropy is, in general, used for measuring the dataââ¬â¢s degree of impurity using a Threshold value. Entropy based anomaly detection system[14] is mainly proposed to prevent DDoS attacks. This is done in two steps. First users are allowed to pass through a router in network site. It detects for legitimate user using detection algorithm. Second again it passes through a router in cloud site. In this methodology confirmation algorithm is incorporated to detect the intruder by checking a threshold value. H. Multithreaded IDS Multithreading technique improves IDS performance within Cloud computing environment to handle large number of data packet flows. The proposed multi-threaded NIDS[8][4] is based on three modules named: capture module, analysis module and reporting module. The first one is responsible of capturing data packets and sending them to analysis part which analyzes them efficiently through matching against pre-defined set of rules and distinguishes the bad packets to generate alerts. Finally, the reporting module can read alerts and immediately prepare alert report. The authors conducted simulation experiments to show the effectiveness of their proposed method and compared it with single thread which presented high performance in terms of processing and execution time. However, the problem of detecting new types of attacks still needs many works to be done. I. Integrated model IDS It uses the combination two or more o f above techniques. It is advantageous since each technique has some advantages and drawbacks. Grid and Cloud Computing Intrusion Detection System (GCCIDS)[10] proposed the integration of knowledge and behavior analysis to detect specific intrusions. However, the proposed prototype cannot discover new types of attacks or create an attack database which must be considered during implementing IDS. A new integrated intrusion detection approach, called FCA NN[13] is proposed based on ANN and fuzzy clustering. Through fuzzy clustering technique, the heterogeneous training set is divided to several homogenous subsets. Thus complexity of each sub training set is reduced and consequently the detection performance is increased. J. Graph based IDS A graph is constructed in which nodes represent state of attack and edges represent the correlations between attacks. Queue graph, Dependency graph and Attack graph are the existing works done on IDS. To prevent vulnerable virtual machines from be ing compromised in the cloud, a multiphase distributed vulnerability detection, measurement, and countermeasure selection mechanism called NICE[2] is proposed, which is built on attack graph-based analytical models and reconfigurable virtual network-based countermeasures. III. PROP OSED WORK In this section, we describe how to construct and utilize node predictive attack graph model to handle vulnerabilities in cloud environ ment. Any attack has some set of predefined steps to incorporate it. An attack can only be accomplished when all its pre-conditions are met [11]. So that by keen monitoring the attack can be prevented. An attack graph is an abstraction that represents the ways an attacker can violate a security policy by leveraging interdependencies among discovered vulnerabilities. An attack graph can be generated from network configuration details and known vulnerabilities within the network. An attack path is a sequence of steps that starts from an attackerââ¬â¢s initial state to the attackerââ¬â¢s goal state (security policy violation) in an attack graph. Every virtual machine has itââ¬â¢s own logfile for recording the actions of that virtual machine. Th is logfile along with the knowledge base provides information for constructing attack graph. Fig. 1. Proposed Architecture IV. IMPLEMENTATION EIDS is implemented using Openebula[15] and OSSIM (Open Source ââ¬â Security Information Management)[3] which comprises of traffic analyzers, vulnerability scanners. OS-SIM is embedded as a virtual mach ine in the c loud environment. The ro le of this virtual machine is to monitor all other virtual machines running in the environment. OSSIM provides a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution. It is a one-stop solution and integrated the open source softwareââ¬â¢s NTOP, Mrtg, Snort, Open VAS, and Nmap. OSSIM is a cost effective solution in the area of monitoring network health and security of network/hosts compared to other propriety products[6]. A. Attack Analyzer Attack Analyzer is built on the top the traffic Analyzer of OS-SIM. It uses each virtual machineââ¬â¢s logfile to analyze and extract attack trace steps. Whenever an attack occurs it is added to the attack graph as a node along with its state and correlation function is invoked. Attack Graph Attack Graph Generator Alert System Knowledge Base Attack Analyzer B. Correlation function Correlation function correlates this new attack with known attacks and gives the prediction steps for this attack. These prediction steps for each attack are used to monitor the further attacks in future. C. Attack Graph Generator Each node in the graph defines an attack and the edge between nodes represent the correlation between that two attacks. V. CONCLUSION Defending distributed environment is difficult. Always prevention is better than cure. Prediction of Intrusions in prior enhances the security of cloud environment. So that predictive attack graph model is chosen for providing security to the distributed cloud environment. At any point the known attacks are correlated with each other to predict new attacks. Pros And Cons Of Canadian Water Exports Environmental Sciences Essay
Pros And Cons Of Canadian Water Exports Environmental Sciences Essay Questionà ¼Ã
¡ Water in the future could become as important as oil as a major source of world conflict. Canada will not have to worry about this and in fact will be a major player in the control and management of water. This assumes that we have an adequate surplus of water and that we can use this as an export product. Examine these ideas from both pro and con sides and develop a conclusion about our future use of water. Water has been a vital resource for many lifeline purposes such as drinking and hygienic purposed like cleaning. Throughout the human history, water has been considered as a cheap resource and abused to comply with human needs. Despite the numerous amounts of sources of water are found, the increasing of global population depletes the non-renewable resources as natural gas, coal and oil. This essay will try to examine the ideas that whether Canada can use the adequate surplus water as an export product or not, base on the water resource in the environment, new technologies applied to the water treatment and the advantage disadvantages of using water resources as an export product. Water is one of the most common and vital resource in our society and harnessing water has been quite easy in most part of the world. Water covers nearly three-quarters of the earths surface and also there is water in the atmosphere and underground. Its mainly in ocean but also found as rivers, lakes, snow and glaciers. In fact, 99% of all the fresh water is found in glaciers, ice fields and underground. However, atmosphere water (snow, rain, fog) and glacier are strongly depending on the weather movement of the earth. On the other hand, there are numerous ways to obtain water from nature; some of them are already available such as perennial sources like oceans, river, lakes and steam. The most convenient way is groundwater resources such as aquifers that make up the water table [1]. Furthermore, water is also available from time to time in the form of influent water sources such as the precipitation of rainfall and snow. As Figure 1 show below, there are 2 types of aquifers, confine d and unconfined aquifer, where the confine aquifers are sandwiched between two porous layers of rocks. The unconfined aquifers are the water between porous and nonporous rocks with can be replenished by rainfall or snow over time. Precipitation of water is still a major resource that people depend on in many part s of the world where the water table is not sufficient enough to the massing population. the adept use of technology, farmers learned to mine ground water to overcome the lack of enough rain(Opie.J,1993). The necessity of water for human life has driven the discovery the abundant water table beneath the ground, and the use of aquifers for domestic purpose has been practical and popular. Another important resource in some area includes the availability of glaciers. This is apparent in Armenia and Azerbaijan where the glaciate and snow-covered mountain are the water towers of the region providing resources for irrigation, industrial, and domestic use which makes it an essent ial need to monitor and protect the ice caps from melting(Jones, 2009). Canada is fortunate, it has only 0.5% of the worlds population, but its land contains about 7% of the worlds renewable water supply. Also, the industry is the major consumer which occupies about 56.3 % of the water consumption, domestic is about 23.7% and agriculture is only 20%. Thousands of dams has erected in a river of stream to block the flow of water so that water can be stored and reservoir. The dams were built to prevent flooding, supply of drinking water, facilitate irrigation, and generate electricity. The placement of dams also have disadvantages such as habitat alteration, fisheries declining along the downstream of the dam, population displacement because of the water level inside the before the dam, sediment capture before the dam and so on. Through the recent research, people have overused the surface water to suit our needs. The water level of the dam and also the water level of the Ontario Lake had drop a significant height from 2009 to 2010. On the other hand, we ar e depleting groundwater which is more easily depleted than the surface water, because it is easier to use up the water resources but most aquifers recharge very slowly. Today people are extracting 160Km3 more water each year than is finding its way back to the ground, the major problem is the increasing of the human population and the area of the city are increasing also, which most of the surface water from the rainfall will run off and affects the amount of water could recharge into to aquifers. In some part of Mexico, India, China, and other Asian and Middle Eastern nations, water tables are falling 1-3 meters per year (book). Human activity has strongly affected the environment as shown in the history, which is also affecting the most important resource water and causing water pollution. It includes acid rain, erosion and sedimentation, groundwater contamination and waste water: Acid rain is that water vapor has been contaminated with chemicals introduced into the atmosphere by automobile and industrial emissions. The precipitation rain has a much higher acidity than clean rain water. The most common chemicals are nitrogen oxides and sulphur formed sulphuric acid and nitric acid. Erosion and sedimentation means water plays as a role in transporting the landscape by moving the large amount of soil, also is sediment. Sediment is eroding from the land, transport by the river or stream system, and finally deposited into the lakes or ocean. The sediment starts with erosion of the landscape, including particles or fragments from the rock material, carried by wind and rainfall, plant and animal activities also contribute to the erosion of the earth surface. Groundwater contamination is the addition of undesirable substance to ground water layer by human activities. It also has been assumed that any contaminates left on or buried under the ground caused groundwater contamination. For example, people dumping waste or toxic material into the wells; some countrys government buried the regularly garbage under certain area. Groundwater contamination is extremely difficult to clean up, sometimes is impossible. Waste water is the released of contaminated water from different industries. The government of Canada is taking the lead in proposing regulations, federal and other wastewater systems, which include standards for national wastewater effluent quality and provide regulatory clarity for rules on reporting for more than 3,700 Canadian facilities.(Environment Canada, 2009) some examples of pollutant that affects the ecosystems and human health include: decaying organic matter and debris can use up the dissolved oxygen in a lake so fish and other aquatic biota cannot survive; excessive nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen/ammonia can cause eutrophication, or over-fertilization of receiving water, which can be toxic to aquatic organism, promote excessive plant growth, reducing the oxygen in the water. Furthermore, the above pollution will recycle and mix by the water recycles flow chart. The pollutant/ contaminate is first released to the earth surface or air, carries by the wind and precipitation, rainfalls to the ground, because of the acid rain will erode the soil and rocks, more sediment is easier to be washed by the water, and contaminated the rivers and underground water, finally theses pollutant stays in the ocean or lakes which may pose threats to human health, aquatic life and wild life. Since the industry has consumed most of the water in Canada with most releasing water pollution such as air pollution and wastewater pollution. It is better to prevent the pollution than to migrate or clear the impact after it occurs. Although the nature system can process a certain amount of waste water, the huge and concentrated amount that generated by our industry can harm ecosystems and threat the human health. Therefore, wastewater treatment has to be done before releasing it to the environment. The first step is physical removal of the Suspended particles by filtration, follow by treatment name Primary Clarifier is to separate the organic substance including gas and liquid, then a secondary treatment, in which water is stirred and aerated so that aerobic bacteria degrade organic pollutant, finally filtering and disinfection is applied to the water tank, and effluent discharge into waterways. During the this process, some of the waste solid particle will be disposed at landfill, or burnt in with gas in a chemical burner. On the other hand, some solid are removed and sent to anaerobic digester, which will produce gas for electricity or biosolids for cropland. The water quantity and water quality in Canada is one of the best in the world, in the future, water will become as important as oil and it will be used as an export product. Obviously, the advantage is the revenue that water can create a huge economy benefit for our country. However, we have to face some practical problems. On the environmental side, the renewable fresh water is decreasing from the last decay all over the world, as the increasing of population, growing of social economy and climate change(due to global warming), the total fresh water resource in Canada is also decreasing. On the human activity side, more dams have been erected, more industries have built and more pollution has been released into the environment, which means more water management and wastewater treatment are needed to ensure there is no contamination of the fresh water resource, no harm to the ecosystem and the human health. On the technologies side, if water has been considered as an export product, how can we export water from our country to another which may be very long distance transportation? How can we ensure the quality of the water to customers? How can we secure our water resource from other consumer, since the water in the river, steam and underground is flowing all the time from one country to another? and finally how do we evaluate the cost verse the revenue of our water product. http://citationmachine.net/ http://www.scanmyessay.com/ http://geoscape.nrcan.gc.ca/h2o/bowen/underground_e.php http://www.ildtechnologies.com/water-waste.htm

Midlife Crisis: Myth? :: essays research papers fc
Midlife Crisis: Myth? Imagine being forty or fifty and asking yourself questions like: What have I done all of my life? Why am I sitting behind a desk? And what am I doing driving a 1994 Grand Am, when I could be driving a BMW z3? Then you come home and your partner says, "Honey, I set up and appointment for you to see Dr. Sherwood." and you reply "What for?" Going through some a midlife transaction is common in men. From having symptoms, then coping with it, and getting professional help. In movies like: "Father of the Bride IIâ⬠and "American Beauty" going through a midlife crisis is glamorized, although in real life it is very painful and not as fun and not near as funny. But is it all a myth, a made up story? Piotr Oles defines, ââ¬Å"The midlife crisis asâ⬠¦significant change in the self and â⬠¦men entering middle age. William Pollack, Ph.D., a psychologist at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Center for Men at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, states that ââ¬Å"All men go through a midlife transitionâ⬠¦but only some go through a midlife crisisâ⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor). Symptoms usually occur in men between the ages of 40 and 50. After all the children have grown up and left the house to pursue their own live, men feel like they are left behind (Oââ¬â¢Connor). Now it is only he and his wife, with feelings that their child may soon be taking care of them. Then it becomes common to wake up in the middle of the night and wonder to yourself, ââ¬Å"Is there any more to life than thisâ⬠(Adler). Toni Bernay, Ph.D., a Beverly Hills, psychologist concluded: The things that had kept them working and kept the passion going are coming to and end. Their spouses donââ¬â¢t seem as interesting to them as they once did, and theyââ¬â¢re facing years where all there is going to be is him and her (Adler). A story in ââ¬Å"Geriatricsâ⬠talked about one manââ¬â¢s experiences with midlife crisis and how he, ââ¬Å"gained recent notoriety in the local newspaper when he was arrested for driving under the influence and lost his licenseâ⬠(Samuels). Drinking is another symptom of a midlife crisis or how Gail H. Oââ¬â¢Connor put it, ââ¬Å"You become a happy-hour regularâ⬠. According to Steven Samuels, ââ¬Å"About one in eight older adults have a problem related to alcohol abuse.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) :: Exploratory Essays
Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) The controversial topic I decided to choose was Michiganââ¬â¢s plans on preventing the spread of CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) in the white-tailed deer and elk herds. Many areas throughout the United States have broken out with this deadly disease, like Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, and even the province of Saskatchewan. The problem with CWD originated from Saskatchewan, where captive deer became infected with this disease that affects the nervous system. This disease is very similar to that of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or more commonly referred to as ââ¬Å"Mad Cow Diseaseâ⬠. The disease was spread through international transportation of deer from one farm to the next. CWD spreads very fast and rapidly. It attacks the nervous system making the deer lose an excessive amount of weight, hair, and all vision becomes blurry leaving the deer disoriented. As of right now, Michigan has tested negative in all counties for the Upper and Lowe r Peninsula. So this leads to many controversial issues about baiting deer for hunting season. Sense, saliva can spread the disease, the DNR is trying to stop hunters from baiting deer to prevent this from spreading. Some hunters rely on hunting over bait bileââ¬â¢s, to attract deer to their hunting areas. Michigan has limitations on the amount of bait you can spread at one time. We are only allowed to spread a five-gallon bucket over a 6-foot area. But the DNR has already made plans to make baiting illegal when any state such as Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or the Canadian province of Ontario, have been infected with CWD [1]. All baiting of deer will be illegal and there will be no more baiting allowed ever. So I feel that the state is doing the right thing to prevent CWD from spreading into the state. Another concern the DNR has is people traveling to other states to hunt and bringing back the animal. The DNR wants to limit the amount of carcasses brought into the state. Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials reminded Michigan hunters headed out-of-state to hunt deer and elk this fall to take common-sense precautions to avoid accidentally bringing Chronic Wasting Disease back to Michigan [2]. The deer can have the disease and also carry it in the feces, urine, saliva, brain, spinal cord, and the meat. So once you have killed the animal, you should take it to a sanitary landfill, or buried deep where no animal can get to it and become infected.

Hatchet :: essays research papers
Hatchet I chose this book because I thought it would be very interesting. I read the back cover and picked out the book because I thought I would like it. The main character in this story is Brian, who went through a plane crash and had to survive on his own for fifty-four days. The character I liked the best was Brian because he is brave, smart, and never gives up. Hatchet is about a boy named Brian Robeson. His parents are separated and live in different parts of the continent. Brian is on his way to live with his father for the summer, when the pilot of the two person plane has a heart attack. Brian keeps the plane up until it runs out of gas, and then he aims for a lake that he can glide into. As soon as they hit the lake, Brian has to swim to the surface before he drowns, leaving the dead pilot in his seat belt. All Brian has is the clothes and a hatchet his mother gave him. While stranded somewhere in Canada, Brian learned how to make a fire, which kept mosquitos away. He builds a spear for fish, and a bow and arrow for hunting birds. He lives in a cave, and does pretty well. After a while, he gets trampled by a crazy moose, and hurts his ribs. In the same day, he gets hit by a tornado. After a while he is better and decides to go look for the survival kit inside the airplane. It takes him all day, and exhausts him, but he finally does it. Inside it there are tons of riches. There is a rifle, but he doesn't like it because it takes him away from all he has learned. There is also almost a years supply of dehydrated food. Last, there is an emergency contact mechanism, and without knowing it, Brian turns it on andleaves it on. When he turned on the mechanism, someone came and found him, and took him back to his family.

You did well on this section also.Jewell seems to be the subject of this mental disorder, coupled with scientific product. Although it is safe to say that most of us would score somewhere at the low or high end of the Big Five characteristic traits, there is usually a plateau upon which we can be scored. Contrarily, Dir. Jewell fluctuated between these two extremes, enjoying each in its totality, until the pressure of the duality became too much to bear. I believe the concept of humanity's sense of good and evil (our duality) can be represented by the low and high ends of the Big Five harmonistic traits that dwell within us all.Therefore, the individual who is perceived as psychotic, as was Dir. Jewell, could possibly be fighting the notion that good and evil exists within us all and results in the evil being projected onto others. Analyzing the story of Dir. Henry Jew ell and Mr.. However, the reader is left to his/her own imagination, based on the author's overall tone of the story, though we can safely assume that he was totally on opposite ends f morality.Also noted is ââ¬Å"The susceptibility to psychosis-psychopaths is evident from an early ageâ⬠(Cord,2000) as in the case of Dir. Jewell. When at the low end of the spectrum of the Big Five personality traits, Dir. Jelly's decision making was wise and well-thought out, as a 2 respectable doctor and member of society. He felt, for example, remorse when reflecting on the sins of Mr.. Hyde, such as when Mr.. Hyde murders Sir Dangers Care, a kind, white haired, old man and important Member of Parliament. On the other hand, when at the high end of the spectrum, Mr..Hyde feels no remorse and actually enjoys the euphoria of the evilness of his actions. When the Doctor is no longe r able to control his personality swings and Dir. Jewell fears he is losing himself to Mr.. Hyde , he knows that he is in trouble and will soon be completely on the high end of the spectrum, unable to transform to Dir. Jewell. Dreading this, he makes the choice to reveal his alter ego to Dir. Hastiest Lyon, a friend of his, (Hyde transforms himself back into Jewell in Dir. Layman's presence) could possibly have been a cry or help.This revelation fits in the personality cluster of Extroversion (ââ¬Å"Extroversion is ally a family of related smaller traits (such as sociability, warmth, and excitement seeking), all sharing a resemblance to each other, but each carving out something of its own identity within the broad family constellationâ⬠(The Person, p. 157). The Doctor's inner struggle with personality conflict is rapidly approaching an end and will ultimately culminate in his suicide. His inner struggle had finally come to an end, but not before he could leave a letter (suic ide note) explaining his dilemma.I guess we could say that Dir. Jelly's personality could also be classified under Open to Experience (as well as open to experimentation). What started out as an experiment in personality soon became a reality wherein the victor became the victim. As always, there is an inner struggle with a person's dual personalities; good and evil. The Beast Within (Writers: Tom Holland (screen story & screen play (February 15,1982), The Wolfram (Writer: Curt Kodiak (original 3 screenplay), 1941) are Just two of the many screen adaptations of the story of Dir. Jewell and Mr..Hyde, and in every one, the complex dichotomy of outward respectability and inward lust are the focus. This examination of the duality of human nature, I believe, can be linked to all human beings. Although our personalities may not be as extreme as that of Dir. Jewell, we all struggle inwardly and labeling our characteristics can be a helpful beginning in determining those who might be at ris k for sinking into the depths of despair and giving in to suicidal urges in order to end their misery. All the books, plays and movies have a common theme; they all blame some outside influence for the metamorphosis that transpires. Dir.
